I used to share with my classes — I am a retired history teacher — stories of the incredible year that was 1968. I would tell them that it was very disconcerting and many began to wonder what was happening to us as a nation. I would always say that it was my hope that we would never again have such a feeling about our great nation. Unfortunately, 2020 has ushered in those same feelings.
How much longer is this going to go on? When will the leadership of the Republican Party finally put the country first and confront this reckless President? Republican leadership rose up in 1974, and told Republican President Richard Nixon that he must resign. Richard Nixon must be looking down at all of this and wishing that the Republican Party of 2020 had been the party of 1974.

A lame-duck President tweets increasingly dangerous and ridiculous conspiracy theories refuse to concede to the President-elect to allow the transition to be properly funded and proceed, and his sycophantic national party, by and large, turns a blind eye and legitimizes his behavior. A national party that continues to cower in fear of this most flawed President, instead of doing the right thing for this country that they purport to love so dearly.
It is past time for Republican Party leadership to honor their Congressional Oath and make that Oval Office visit to the President, as their predecessors did in 1974, to tell him it is time to concede so that the orderly transition of power can begin and be fully funded.
If the President continues in his present state of mind and ignores the reality of the Presidential Election of 2020 and Republican Party leadership, then it is time for his Cabinet to fulfill their Congressional Oath. They, too, must meet with the President and tell him it is time to concede and this nonsense must stop. If the President ignores the exhortations of his Cabinet and party leadership, then it is time to invoke the 25th Amendment.
But, perhaps the day before he is confronted with the reality of the invocation of the 25th Amendment, Senate Majority Leader McConnell and Vice-President Pence should simply walk unannounced into the Oval Office, greet the President cordially, hand him a sealed envelope, and then walk out.
